What exactly is a Ceramic Car Coating?
Ceramic Coatings are a semi-permanent structure that layers on top of your paint to preserve it better than traditional waxing. Each coating manufacturer has their own proprietary mix. Typically, a ceramic coating is silicon dioxide – and sometimes even titanium dioxide. When applied, the coating creates a clear flexible barrier between the environment and your car’s paint.
No matter the brand, most ceramic coatings such as Ceramic Pro, CQuartz, Gtechniq and Opti-Coat contain silicon dioxide which is more commonly known as silica. If you don’t know anything about silica, we have a little secret for you…it’s also found in Quartz and has a Mohs scale hardness rating of about 7 out of 10. Now that’s hard!
Ceramic coatings attach chemically to your clear-coat via a covalent bond which is the strongest type of bond in nature. This allows your coating to last for many years. Other common auto products, like waxes, don’t have the same bonding strength. Waxing requires constant re-application to maintain protection with less chemical resistance than ceramic coatings.

Do Ceramic Coatings help minimize swirl marks??

This is false.
If you put a key against a coating, it will leave a mark. It will, however, assist in resisting swirl-marks due to its protective abilities.

What do Ceramic Coatings do?
Acid rain, environmental contaminants and chemical fallouts have a corrosive effect on your paint and can easily leave stains. Coatings provide superior protection against staining and etching over traditional wax and sealants.
Since ceramic coatings stick to your paint via a covalent bond, they are extremely durable. Depending on the coating you choose, the average coating lifespan can be anywhere between 2-10 years (10 years if properly maintained). Comparably, polymer paint sealant can last from 6 to 9 months and waxes only last anywhere from 2 to 4 months.
